Colin no longer needed an alarm. It was 6 am and he was wide awake. He got up, did yoga for an hour, then took a shower. Regardless of what Brother Thomas thought, he intended to return to Johnny’s room first thing and check what was in that piggy bank. If it was a key, he needed to find out what it was for.

There was no time for breakfast if he wanted to beat the traffic. Just as he was about to go upstairs to check on his mother, Jeanie appeared at the back door, brandishing an M&S plastic bag.

‘You’re early,’ he said. The fact that she stayed across from them on the cul-de-sac meant an easy commute to see his mother as early as she could.

‘I’m always up with the lark, and I saw your lights were on. Did she have another bad night?’

‘She didn’t look great last night, but I think she’s still asleep. It’s me – I need to be in work sharpish.’ Colin gestured to the bag. ‘Is that my mum’s pills?’

‘Aye. I knew she’d be fretting about running out,’ Jeanie muttered, placing the bag on the table behind the teapot. ‘Have you had your breakfast?’

‘No time. I’ll grab a bite once I’m at school.’

‘Why don’t you run along?’

‘You sure? I can wait another—’ He looked at his watch. It was 7.30, later than he’d thought. ‘On second thoughts, I’d better get going.’

Collecting his jacket and backpack from the hallway, he heard Moira moving about upstairs. ‘That’s me away, Mum. I’ll see you later,’ he shouted. But there was no response. He rushed upstairs and was about to enter her bedroom when she replied.

‘Bye, son,’ she said.
